Andy Mitchell is an experienced education consultant, system leader, and executive coach with over 30 years in primary education, including 21 years as a headteacher across three local authorities and a multi-academy trust. 

In 2025/26, Andy worked as an attendance specialist with Inclusive Attendance, auditing and supporting senior leadership teams across more than 30 primary, secondary, and special schools nationwide. This has given him valuable cross-phase insight and specialist expertise in attendance, now a national priority in the government’s Every Child Achieving and Thriving white paper (2026).

He has also worked as a School Improvement Partner, helping leadership teams develop strategic plans ahead of Ofsted inspections, including advising governors on headteacher performance management—providing direct experience of governance and accountability at MAT level.

What to expect

Finding and keeping excellent leaders is one of the defining challenges facing the education sector. The pipeline of high-calibre candidates for headship and senior leadership is narrowing. The consequences of a poor appointment are borne disproportionately by the children and communities those leaders serve.

Andy Mitchell has recruited dozens of education professionals across every leadership level – from middle leaders to headteachers — during 21 years as a headteacher. Critically, he has also done this in the most demanding context possible: as the founding headteacher of a brand new free school, where every appointment had to be right first time, before a single child had walked through the door.

He subsequently supported the headteacher he appointed through a successful pre-opening Ofsted inspection. That means his experience runs the full arc – from scoping what the role requires, through designing and running the recruitment process, to supporting the appointed leader through their critical early tenure.

Inclusion & Disadvantage Accelerator

Under the November 2025 EIF, Inclusion is a named evaluation area for the first time — and the government’s Every Child Achieving and Thriving white paper (February 2026) makes inclusion in mainstream schools a central national mission, backed by £1.6 billion through the new Inclusive Mainstream Fund.

Andy has led schools serving complex, diverse communities, including co-locating with a primary special school and leading his community through Covid.

During 2025/26 he has worked as an attendance specialist with Inclusive Attendance, conducting audits and working with SLTs in over 30 primary, secondary and special schools across England — giving him current, cross-phase expertise in the attendance agenda that is now a stated government target (94% by 2028/29). 

He brings the EEF’s most relevant evidence on SEND, adaptive teaching and the disadvantaged gap directly into school practice.

Some leadership challenges don’t have a manual. Amalgamating two established schools into a single new institution. Opening a brand new free school from the ground up. Leading a community through a major building project whilst sustaining educational outcomes throughout. These are among the most complex, high-stakes organisational projects in education – and the leaders responsible for them are almost always doing it for the first time.

Andy Mitchell has done them both. Not as an observer or an academic. As the person responsible.

He successfully amalgamated two primary schools to create a single new school – navigating the cultural, staffing, community and governance complexity that only those who have managed it truly understand. He opened a brand new free school, recruiting the entire staff from scratch, building the culture, systems and identity of a new educational community before a single child arrived. He has been a senior member of the leadership and management team on two new school construction projects, working across the intersection of educational design, community engagement, building programme management and operational readiness.
